S1 Bus from Suvarnabhumi

S1 bus from Suvarnabhumi: the easiest way to get to central Bangkok. And honestly, it’s the option I recommend the most to get from the airport to downtown Bangkok.

Sure, a private transfer will drop you right at your accommodation’s door. But if you’re like me — someone who loves a bit of adventure and enjoys moving around like a local — then the S1 bus is your best friend. And don’t worry, I’m not talking about the kind of buses I took in Central America where there were literally chickens on board. The S1 costs only €1.60, has air conditioning, runs every 30 minutes from 6 AM to 8 PM, and is usually almost empty. Yes, you’re traveling like a local… but in the most comfortable way possible.
Just one thing to keep in mind: you need to pay in cash and only in Thai baht — it’s 60 THB.

My recommendation (what I did):
Exchange the smallest bill you have. Hopefully €5. I only had a €10 note, so I exchanged that and called it a day. I don’t recommend changing everything at the airport because the rates are always the worst. At Suvarnabhumi they gave me: €1 = 32 THB, while in the city I got 37. For just €10 the difference wasn’t huge, so whatever — but don’t exchange more than the bare minimum at the airport.

You’re at the airport. Once you have your backpack/suitcase and you’ve cleared immigration, head toward the exit. When you reach the public arrivals area, look for the escalators or the elevator and go one floor down.

Once you’re there, look for Platform 7. That’s it — really. Below I’m leaving a photo of the sign you’re looking for once you reach Platform 7.

How to Get from Suvarnabhumi to Downtown Bangkok

The bus runs every 30 minutes, doesn’t make stops until it enters the city center, and goes all the way to Khaosan Road. Here are the S1 bus stops so you can compare them with your accommodation’s address and get off wherever works best. It dropped me two blocks from my hostel — absolute win.

S1 Bus Stops:

  • After Saphan Khao Intersection
  • Opposite Wat Sunthon Thammathan
  • Phan Fa Pier
  • Nitas Rattanakosin
  • Satriwithaya School
  • Wat Bowonniwet (Phra Sumen side)
  • Wat Bowonniwet (Bowonniwet side)

That’s it, amiga — hope it helps!
