How to get to Samana by public transport

cómo llegar a Samana

Getting to Samaná from Punta Cana or Santo Domingo by public transport is a doddle. It’s totally doable I promise! Trust me, you don’t need to splash out on a private tour, shuttle, or taxi. Plus, it’s not like you’ll have to change transport a million times. I mentioned a bit about this in a post on how to get to Las Galeras, but I’ll repeat it here because I know you love it when I repeat myself! *wink*

How to get to Samana by public transport

Let’s start with the easiest option.

From Santo Domingo

If you’re in the capital city of the Dominican Republic, head to the Asotrapusa terminal or the Caribe Tours terminal. Buses to Samaná run fairly frequently. The difference is that some are more direct than others. And there are two or three a day that go all the way to Las Galeras (if that’s your final stop).

Please take a look at the following pictures for the schedule, though I have to say it. This is the Dominican Republic, so sometimes you might get to the station at the hour mentioned and maybe that day, that bus does not depart. The reason? Who knows, it’s just the way things are! So, if you are following a tight schedule I would suggest to try the earliers options.

From Punta Cana

I mentioned this in the other post I linked above about getting to Las Galeras, but here’s the lowdown again.

If you’re wondering how to get to Samaná by public transport from Punta Cana, the reality is you’ll need to go to Santo Domingo first. But don’t worry, you don’t have to go into the city. Here’s what you do:

  1. Head to the Expreso Bavaro station. You’ll see several bus companies. Ask around to find out which one goes to Santo Domingo and hop on.
  2. Tell the bus driver to drop you off at Av. Las Américas on the motorway to Samaná. This way, you’ll save more than an hour of travel time.
  3. Get off at the junction, leg it across the motorway because they drop you on the other side, and head to the station. Job done.

Just keep an eye on the schedules mentioned in the photos at the beginning of the post, adding about 45 minutes to each one to get a rough idea of when you’ll arrive. If I were you, I’d start the journey as early as possible to make sure you arrive during daylight 🙂
